Before you fall for the vibe

The honest read on Seattle's seasons

The dark, not the rain, is the adjustment. Winter days are short and heavily overcast, and the drizzle lingers well into spring.

What locals know

  • Total rainfall is lower than people expect. It is the constancy and the low sky, not the volume, that you feel.
  • The cloud cover is why the evergreen and the water look the way they do.
  • Locals lean into it with coffee, indoor culture, and good rain gear rather than umbrellas.
  • Summers are a genuine reward: long, dry, mild evenings with the mountains out.

A grey winter you plan around, paid back by glorious July-to-September days.

The soul of Seattle

A city that builds something enormous in a garage and stays a little embarrassed about the attention.

The sound of the world came from here

In the late 1980s a small Seattle label called Sub Pop began releasing records by local bands almost no one had heard of, Nirvana and Soundgarden among them. Within a few years the sound of a rainy northwestern city was the sound of the whole world. Seattle has a habit of inventing something huge and staying quietly uncomfortable with the credit.

The market the city refused to lose

Pike Place has run since 1907, one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the country, and in the 1970s Seattle voted to save it from the wrecking ball. The fish still fly, the first Starbucks still pours, and the city still protects its own texture on purpose.
