Before you fall for the vibe
Summer is hot and, in bad years, smoky. The valley bowl holds 100-degree stretches in July and August, and wildfire haze can settle in for weeks.
What locals know
A hot working summer bought back by blossom springs, golden falls, and easy winters.
The soul of Medford
In 1910 a Seattle hotelier traded his grand Hotel Sorrento for 240 acres of Rogue Valley pear orchard. When the Depression killed the luxury market, his sons Harry and David packed their Royal Riviera pears, so big you can eat them with a spoon, and pitched them door to door to San Francisco and New York executives as business gifts. The Fruit-of-the-Month Club they invented in 1936 still ships from Medford. The whole American gift-basket tradition traces back to this valley refusing to waste a good harvest.
Medford sits in a bowl of orchards and vineyards between the Cascades and the Siskiyous, with Crater Lake a day trip north and the Rogue River running through the middle of daily life. It is the practical, affordable center of a valley where the scenery is the backdrop to errands, not a vacation you plan.
