Late summer can bring wildfire smoke. In a bad year, weeks of August and September turn hazy enough to move life, and some outdoor theater, indoors.
What locals know
A theater-town spring and fall, a golden summer, and a smoke watch you learn to live with.
The soul of Ashland
In 1935 a local teacher named Angus Bowmer staged Twelfth Night inside the shell of an old Chautauqua theater, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival has run nearly every year since. Today a town of about twenty thousand supports one of the oldest and largest repertory theaters in the country. Living here means world-class actors in the grocery line and a season ticket becoming part of your year, the way a gym membership is elsewhere.
Lithia Park climbs almost a hundred acres from the downtown Plaza into the hills, landscaped by John McLaren, the superintendent who shaped San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. It begins where the shops end, so an espresso becomes a creekside walk without ever getting in a car. On the Plaza, fountains installed in 1927 still pour the mineral lithia water the town is named for. Locals dare newcomers to try it exactly once.
